Music Toolbox

guitarmusic theory

A few years ago, having wanted to for far longer, I finally knuckled down and started learning the guitar.

(aside - I have overwhelmingly used Justin Guitar and would recommend it to any wannabe guitarists. The courses are thorough, well-structured, and it’s perfectly possible to learn the instrument without straying out of the generous free content)

As a hobby player, I have little motivation to commit to memorising swathes of music theory, so I’ve built some little web apps I can reference instead. They are hosted as github pages and you can see the repo here.

I’m quite sure there’s nothing original here, but there’s a satisfaction in building something to your own exact requirements.

The tools are:

  • Scale Helper - pick a scale and a root note and see which scales are in the key, in which roles
  • Key Finder - suggest the likely key of a song given its constituent chords
  • Strumming Pattern - Build strumming patterns and see how they sound
